Acne Scars

Acne scars are permanent textural changes or indentations on the skin caused by severe acne breakouts. They occur when acne damages the deeper layers of the skin, leading to collagen loss or excess collagen formation. Acne scars can appear as depressed (atrophic) scars, raised (hypertrophic) scars, or dark pigmentation spots.

Types of Acne Scars

  • Atrophic (Depressed) Scars
    • Ice Pick Scars – Deep, narrow scars that extend into the skin.
    • Boxcar Scars – Wider, U-shaped scars with sharp edges.
    • Rolling Scars – Wave-like depressions across the skin.
  • Hypertrophic (Raised) Scars – Thick, raised scars caused by excessive collagen production.
  • Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) – Dark spots left behind after acne heals (not true scars but discoloration).
